Maths

At St Joseph's Catholic Primary School, we are committed to providing high-quality mathematics education that equips our children with the necessary skills, knowledge, and confidence to succeed in their academic and personal lives. We develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts through a mastery approach that encourages students to think critically, reason logically, and apply their learning in real-world contexts.

At the heart of our mathematics curriculum is teaching for mastery, this approach is grounded in evidence-based practices that have been proven to promote long-term retention and mastery of mathematical concepts. We use the Whiterose resources to help build a strong foundation and deep understanding of mathematical concepts and skills. Our teachers use the Whiterose resources effectively whilst scaffolding learning to ensure that all students can access and engage with the curriculum.

In addition to the Whiterose resources, we also use the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM) to deepen and expand our mathematics curriculum. The NCETM provides a comprehensive framework for teaching mathematics that is grounded in research and best practice. We use these resources to ensure that our curriculum is coherent, relevant, and engaging for all students.

Overall, our intent is to provide a mathematics curriculum that promotes deep understanding, critical thinking, and mastery of mathematical concepts. We believe that the Whiterose resources alongside the NCETM framework provide a powerful tool for achieving this goal, and we are committed to using these resources to provide the best possible mathematics education for our students. Our aim is to develop children who are confident, competent, and enthusiastic about mathematics, and who have the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in their academic and personal lives.
