British Values and Global Citizenship
"to be responsible, respectful, active citizens who contribute positively to society’ (OFSTED 2019)
The Government defined British Values in their 2011 Prevent Strategy and have provided advice to schools in ‘Promoting fundamental British Values as part of SMSC in schools’ (2014).
Schools are required to promote the following British Values:
- Democracy
- Rule of law
- Individual liberty
- Mutual respect
- Tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs
At St Joseph’s the teaching of these values is embedded into our school ethos, PSHCE and across other areas of the curriculum. The values are reinforced regularly through our curriculum.
At St Joseph’s we will actively challenge pupils, staff or parents expressing opinions contrary to fundamental British Values, including ‘extremist’ views.
Global Citizens - How do we get our pupils to understand beyond their lived experiences, to put themselves into other people's shoes and try to understand a different point of view?
We are forming a link with a primary School in Lilongwe, Malawi. The pictures below are Father David's visit to the school in September 2019.
