St Joseph's Catholic Primary School, Thame

Inspired to be our best.....

French is the modern language we teach at St Joseph's in Primary 2 (years 3-6).  This happens on a Tuesday afternoon we follow a structured progression.  Mrs Harriman, a French graduate and teacher, teaches these lessons.

French is taught using a variety of strategies - with a focus on enjoyment, challenge and fun!  Regular repetition and reinforcement are essential for children to become confident in French and new vocabulary is introduced supported by visual and kinaesthetic cues to help children who have differing learning styles.  The children enjoy the opportunity to take part in paired speaking and listening activities, including role play.  Children also enjoy learning French through games, songs and stories.  For example listening to familiar stories, such as the Very Hungry Caterpillar, read in French.

Once children have secured the correct pronunciation, they begin to read and write in French.  They also learn how to use a dictionary to check the spelling and gender of words.

The school offers French Club, after school, to both Primary 1 (Year 1 and 2) and Primary 2 (Years 3-6)
